Azul Finalizes R$2.66 Billion BNDES Financing, Receives First Tranche
Brazil’s largest airline, Azul, secured R$2.66 billion in long-term financing from state-owned BNDES, immediately receiving a R$1.3 billion tranche.

Azul S.A., one of Brazil’s major airlines, secured up to R$2.66 billion (about $511 million) in long-term financing from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), with the first tranche of approximately R$1.3 billion disbursed on September 29, 2026. This significant infusion of capital is designed to strengthen the carrier’s liquidity and financial position, primarily by refinancing existing, higher-cost obligations.
The financing utilizes resources from the National Civil Aviation Fund (FNAC), which is a key government-backed mechanism to support the Brazilian aviation sector. The BNDES, Brazil's powerful state-owned national development bank, is administering the loan, which carries a term of up to five years. For the airline, the deal is a critical step in lowering its overall cost of capital, an enduring challenge for carriers in the region.
Azul, which bills itself as Brazil’s largest airline by the number of cities served, confirmed that it will use a portion of the funds to immediately prepay an existing financial obligation. This prepayment amounts to roughly R$400 million of higher-cost debt, a move that directly reduces the company’s future financial expenses and supports its wider liability-management initiatives.
The long-term nature of the financing provides stability to the airline, which operates an extensive domestic network of approximately 800 daily flights to more than 130 destinations across the country. By replacing expensive short-term debt with favorable long-term government funding, the company is better positioned to navigate the volatile economic and fuel-cost environment that has pressured airline balance sheets globally.
Azul expects to receive the remaining portion of the R$2.66 billion financing, which is also approximately R$1.3 billion, in the fourth quarter of 2026. The disbursement marks a continued reliance on structured government financing to support major national carriers and ensure the stability and expansion of the country's vast domestic air travel market.
What it touches
This government-backed financing is material to the Brazilian airline sector, as it signals official support for maintaining the financial health of key players like Azul. This financial stability directly benefits the broader travel and tourism sectors, along with the thousands of jobs that the airline industry supports across the Brazilian economy.
