American retail investors holding international consumer stocks saw cash distributions hit their accounts as Brazil’s largest department store chain processed its third-quarter payout. Investors who held positions in the company before the late-September cutoff received their cash yields directly through their brokerage platforms.

The board of directors at Lojas Renner, the leading apparel and lifestyle retailer in Brazil, approved the distribution of BRL 161.4 million (approximately $29 million USD) in Interest on Equity (JCP) for the third quarter of 2024, according to a corporate filing submitted to the Brazilian Securities Commission (CVM). The cash distribution was paid starting October 8, 2024, to all shareholders of record as of September 24, 2024.

The gross payout per share was set at BRL 0.168760, as reported by Brazilian financial news outlet Estadão on September 19, 2024. Because the distribution is structured under Brazil's unique "Interest on Equity" tax framework rather than a standard dividend, the gross amount is subject to a local withholding tax of 15% for non-exempt foreign investors, which is deducted at the source before the cash reaches international accounts.

Navigating a Tough Retail Landscape

Lojas Renner operates as an omnichannel fashion store ecosystem, managing popular domestic brands including Renner, Camicado, and Youcom. Headquartered in Porto Alegre, the company has historically been a favorite among emerging market investors looking for exposure to Brazil's rising middle class. However, the retailer has faced a challenging domestic environment in recent quarters.

According to the company's second-quarter earnings report, Lojas Renner posted a net income of BRL 315 million, but its net revenue growth faced headwinds. High domestic interest rates set by Brazil's central bank, elevated household debt levels, and fierce competition from cross-border digital platforms have weighed heavily on local retail sales. In response to these headwinds, the company's management focused heavily on digital integration and logistics efficiency.

Despite these operational adjustments, the retail giant's board approval to distribute BRL 161.4 million highlights its commitment to maintaining shareholder yields. The company bet on a stronger holiday shopping season in the final months of 2024, driven by store renovations and digital sales initiatives.

For retail investors using US brokerages like Fidelity, Schwab, or Robinhood, Lojas Renner S.A. is accessible via its unsponsored American Depositary Receipt (ADR) program under the ticker LRENY, which trades over-the-counter. The underlying local shares trade on the B3 exchange in São Paulo under the ticker LREN3. Because this is an unsponsored over-the-counter asset, investors should note that the exact distribution date in US dollars may experience a short delay of a few business days due to currency conversion and custodian processing fees.
