MercadoLibre founder Marcos Galperin transitions to executive chairman
Founder Marcos Galperin has stepped into an executive chairman role, handing the CEO reins of Latin America's e-commerce giant to Ariel Szarfsztejn.

US retail investors holding shares in Latin America’s largest e-commerce and financial technology ecosystem are navigating the first major leadership transition in the company’s history. Founder Marcos Galperin officially stepped down as Chief Executive Officer, transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman. The planned succession, which took full effect on January 1, 2026, according to the company's filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), hands the day-to-day operations to Ariel Szarfsztejn, the company's former Commerce President.
The leadership change comes as the Montevideo-headquartered company continues to scale its dominant position across South America, particularly in Brazil, its largest market. While Amazon MercadoLibre Brazil competition remains intense, the regional incumbent has built a defensive moat through its integrated logistics network and its fintech arm, Mercado Pago. In his new role as Executive Chairman, Galperin remains actively engaged with the board and management team, focusing on long-term strategy, capital allocation, organizational culture, and product development.
Szarfsztejn, a 43-year-old Stanford MBA graduate who joined the company in 2017, takes over a business that has successfully linked retail shopping with digital banking. According to the company's financial reports, "ecosystemic users"—customers who actively use both the retail marketplace and Mercado Pago's financial services—grew 37% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2026. These highly engaged users generated 70% more gross merchandise volume on the marketplace and held twice the assets under management compared to single-platform users.
The transition is structured to ensure continuity as MercadoLibre expands its credit portfolio, which reached $16.4 billion in mid-2026, representing 75% year-over-year growth. By keeping the founder at the strategic helm while elevating an experienced internal executive who previously ran the core logistics and commerce divisions, the company aims to reassure international investors that its aggressive expansion strategy in Brazil and Mexico will proceed without operational disruption.
