Embrapa Launches AI Platform to Predict Climate Risks
Brazil's Embrapa is launching a R$ 2 million digital platform to predict extreme weather risks, aiming to reduce crop insurance losses and protect yields.
The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) is launching a new scientific initiative in July 2026 to mitigate the impact of extreme weather on the country's agribusiness. The project, titled "Do risco à decisão" (From Risk to Decision), is a R$ 2 million, 48-month public-private endeavor designed to build a digital platform integrating databases and biophysical simulation models. By offering real-time risk mitigation dashboards, the initiative aims to drastically reduce agricultural insurance losses and prevent crop failures across Brazil.
The project brings together a network of 39 researchers and analysts across 15 of Embrapa's decentralized units. The primary focus of the platform is to predict and monitor severe droughts and frosts, which are the leading causes of crop failure in South America. By leveraging advanced biophysical modeling, the platform will generate early warning indicators to help farmers, public managers, and financial institutions make data-driven decisions before extreme weather events strike.
This technological push directly targets Brazil's most highly traded agricultural commodities, including soy, corn, and wheat, alongside other key crops like rice and beans. For institutional investors and agribusiness stakeholders tracking Brazilian assets—such as Banco do Brasil (BBAS3), BrasilAgro (AGRO3), and Nova SOJA (SOJA3)—the platform represents a major step forward in stabilizing supply chains. By modernizing agricultural risk management, the project is expected to refine rural credit allocation and optimize crop insurance policies nationwide.
