Brazil Weighs WTO Challenge Against EU’s Impending US$2.4 Billion Meat Export Ban

The Brazilian government is evaluating a formal challenge at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the European Union’s impending import ban on Brazilian meat products, a measure that threatens up to US$2.4 billion in annual export revenue for the country's agribusiness sector. The ban, officially set to take effect on September 3, 2026, cites Brazil’s insufficient guarantees regarding the monitoring of antimicrobials in animal production, an issue Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) has suggested carries a "political dimension" given its scope and timing.
