Brazil’s Central Bank Eliminates Contactless Pix Limit, Pressuring Banks to Modernize B2B Cash Management

The Brazilian Central Bank (BC) has eliminated the fixed R$500 limit on *Pix por Aproximação* (contactless Pix) transactions, a regulatory shift that immediately raises the stakes for traditional banks competing for corporate clients in Brazil. Effective October 1, 2026, contactless transactions using the nation’s instant payment system will now be subject only to the standard, user-defined limits already in place for Pix payments made via QR code or key, allowing for much higher-value transfers in physical commerce. The change is designed to standardize the experience of using Pix and signals the BC’s intent to further integrate its widely popular instant payment system into high-value physical transactions, a domain historically dominated by cards.
