China Auto Imports Surge in Brazil Ahead of EV Tariff Hike, Pressuring Local Industry

Chinese automakers have dramatically reshaped Brazil’s vehicle import market this year, capturing more than half of all foreign car sales as companies rushed to beat a significant tariff increase on electric and hybrid models. Shipments from China to Brazil more than doubled, rising 105.4% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, giving China a 52.4% share of all vehicles imported, according to the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea). This massive influx is forcing a structural shift in the Brazilian auto sector, which has long been dominated by established American, European, and Asian manufacturers.
