Brazil’s decades-long effort to build the Transnordestina railway is finally nearing its goal, with the massive infrastructure project poised to create a vital new export corridor for the country’s interior. Construction of the 1,206-kilometer railway, which connects the agricultural heartland of southern Piauí state to the Port of Pecém on the coast of Ceará, has reached 82% completion in its key first phase, with a targeted finish date at the end of 2027. The project, with an estimated total investment of R$15 billion (approximately $3 billion), represents one of Brazil’s largest linear infrastructure undertakings and is expected to fundamentally reshape the logistics landscape of the country’s long-neglected Northeast.
