Embraer Order Backlog Hits Record $35.7 Billion Driven by Defense Deals
Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer reported a record $35.7 billion backlog in Q3 2026, fueled by a 56% surge in its military defense division.

If you have flown on a regional flight operated by United Express, American Eagle, or Delta Connection, you have likely sat in a jet built by Embraer. The Brazilian aerospace giant, which dominates the global market for commercial passenger jets under 150 seats, has quietly become a cornerstone of regional travel in the United States.
On October 23, 2026, Embraer reported that its firm order backlog reached an all-time high of $35.7 billion in the third quarter of 2026. While this represents a 3% increase from the previous quarter and a 14% jump year-over-year, the underlying driver of this growth is shifting away from traditional commercial passenger planes and toward heavy military hardware.
The company's Defense & Security division has emerged as its fastest-growing segment, with its backlog surging 56% year-over-year to reach $6.1 billion in the third quarter of 2026. This rapid expansion is primarily fueled by international demand for the C-390 Millennium, a multi-mission military transport aircraft designed to compete directly with older turboprop cargo planes. During the third quarter, Colombia's Air Force signed a deal worth over $300 million for two C-390 aircraft, joining a growing list of international buyers that includes Sweden, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates.
Commercial Growth Slows as Defense Takes Off
While the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer's Commercial Aviation division remains its largest business unit with a backlog of $15.8 billion, its growth has slowed to just 4% year-over-year. Commercial aviation now represents 44% of the total order book, down from nearly 49% a year ago, while the defense division's share has climbed to 17%.

The challenge ahead for the Brazilian company is converting this massive backlog into actual deliveries. Embraer delivered 66 aircraft in the third quarter of 2026, and must ramp up its production pace in the final quarter of the year to meet its full-year delivery guidance of 80 to 85 commercial jets and 160 to 170 executive jets.

For investors holding Embraer's New York-listed ADRs (ERJ) or broad-market aerospace ETFs, the backlog expansion provides visibility into the revenue pipeline, though it shifts the company's risk profile further toward global defense budgets.
