The race for Brazil’s presidency is locked in a statistical dead heat, with incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva holding a narrow but technically insignificant lead over Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, according to a Datafolha poll released on Friday. The finding underscores the high degree of political uncertainty facing the country just weeks before the first round of voting in October.

The survey, released on September 11, 2026, found President Lula, of the Workers’ Party (PT), with 39% of the first-round voting intention, against 35% for Bolsonaro, who is the candidate for the Liberal Party (PL). With the poll’s margin of error at two percentage points, the four-point gap places the two leading candidates in a technical tie. The polarization is sustained in a simulated second-round runoff, where Lula registered 46% of the vote against 44% for Bolsonaro—a difference that is also within the margin of error and constitutes a statistical tie.

The tightening race follows the formal finalization of the candidate field by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) the same day, which concluded the legal process and locked in the 12 candidates set to appear on the ballot. The TSE is Brazil’s highest electoral body, responsible for managing the entire election process, from candidate registration to vote counting, and resolving disputes. Its confirmation signals the start of the final, intense phase of the campaign for the October election.

Flávio Bolsonaro, a Senator for Rio de Janeiro, is the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and has emerged as the principal torchbearer for the political right in this election. His candidacy, endorsed by his father, connects the current race directly to the deep-seated political divisions that marked the 2018 and 2022 elections. For a foreign audience, his rise reflects the enduring political strength of the family’s brand and its appeal to voters focused on conservative social values and state reform.

The sustained technical tie between the two most polarized political figures in Brazil presidential election signals that a runoff is highly probable and will likely be a close, contentious affair. This high degree of political risk is a primary concern for investors and policy makers, as the final weeks of the campaign will be dominated by debates over major fiscal and economic policy reforms.

What it touches

The tight race between the two ideologically opposed candidates is seen by analysts as a major source of Brazil political uncertainty, which tends to weigh on traded assets. The primary concern is the divergence in policy platforms: a Lula win is generally associated with increased state intervention and higher social spending, while a Bolsonaro presidency is expected to prioritize privatization, deregulation, and fiscal reform. This uncertainty affects the outlook for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) like Petrobras and Eletrobras, as well as the Brazilian real and the broader Ibovespa stock index.
