Nu Holdings Launches U.S. Accounts While Acquiring Brazil License
Nu Holdings enters the U.S. consumer market via a partner bank while acquiring Banco Porto Real in Brazil to satisfy local brand naming rules.

A Latin American digital banking giant is moving directly into the U.S. consumer market, offering high-yield, multi-currency products to American retail customers. The expansion marks a major test of whether a customer-experience model built to disrupt Latin American banking can translate to the highly competitive and mature U.S. financial landscape.
Nu Holdings, widely known as Nubank, officially commenced operations in the United States on September 10, 2026, according to a company notice to the market. The digital bank introduced "Nu Global," a multi-currency digital account designed for cross-border transactions across more than 35 countries. In the U.S., Nu is partnering with FDIC-insured Lead Bank to offer deposit accounts with a 3.50% annual percentage yield (APY) on stablecoin conversions, alongside a no-annual-fee credit card, while it awaits final approval for a national bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
Simultaneously, the fintech giant is solidifying its regulatory foundation in its home market of Brazil. Nu Holdings entered into a share purchase agreement to acquire 100% of Banco Porto Real de Investimentos S.A., a move announced in SEC filings on July 20, 2026. The acquisition adds a full banking license to its Brazilian conglomerate, allowing the company to satisfy Joint Resolution No. 17, a local rule set by the Central Bank of Brazil and the National Monetary Council governing brand name usage for regulated financial institutions.
This dual-track strategy highlights how Nu Holdings is managing political and regulatory risks across different jurisdictions. In Brazil, securing a full banking license reduces compliance friction under the watchful eye of the Central Bank of Brazil, which has steadily increased oversight on fast-growing fintechs. In the U.S., the partner-bank model allows the company to gather consumer data and build brand recognition while navigating the lengthy federal charter approval process.
The expansion comes as the digital bank boasts unprecedented scale in its core markets. As of its second-quarter earnings report on August 13, 2026, Nubank reached 139 million customers globally, including 118 million in Brazil and 16 million in Mexico. By targeting the U.S. market, the company is positioning itself to capture lucrative cross-border remittance corridors, particularly between the U.S. and Mexico, where it already operates as a fully authorized bank.
