Vale Chairman Race: Ollie Takes Strong Lead Ahead of Key Vote
Manuel Lino Silva de Sousa Oliveira (Ollie) leads Vale's chairman race with 1.29 billion votes, signaling a major governance shift for the mining giant.

A decisive shareholder assembly is underway at Vale S.A. to elect its new chairman, marking a critical turning point for the Brazilian mining giant’s corporate governance after months of succession disputes. According to a synthetic voting map released by the company, independent director Manuel Lino Silva de Sousa Oliveira, widely known as Ollie, has opened a significant lead in the race. Ollie, who currently serves as Vale's Lead Independent Director, has secured 1.292 billion favorable votes, or approximately 62.5% of the early ballots cast.
The preliminary count represents 48.5% of Vale's total voting capital, compiled from remote voting sheets submitted via the B3 exchange, Bradesco, and the company itself. Ollie's sole competitor, board member Marcelo Gasparino, trailed with 746.2 million favorable votes and faced 889 million rejections. The final outcome of the extraordinary general meeting will be determined once in-person votes and American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) managed by JPMorgan Chase Bank are fully processed.
The high-stakes election was triggered after Previ, the Banco do Brasil pension fund and Vale's largest individual shareholder with a 7% stake, requested the removal of former chairman Daniel Stieler to strengthen corporate governance. Stieler subsequently resigned before the formal ouster vote could take place. Previ has thrown its full support behind Ollie, emphasizing his 45 years of mining industry experience and his capacity to align the board with long-term shareholder interests.
The leadership transition is highly anticipated by global investors monitoring the Brazil stock market today, as the new chairman will directly influence Vale's strategic direction, capital allocation, and iron ore pricing strategies. On the local market, the Ibovespa today edged down slightly with the IBOV at 173325.66 (-0.03%). Meanwhile, Vale's local shares VALE3 rose 0.61% to 72.37 BRL, outperforming the broader index, while state-run oil firm PETR4 traded at 41.66 BRL (+1.24%) and financial heavyweight ITUB4 stood at 42.53 BRL (+0.54%).
