The benchmark Ibovespa index closed down 1.52% at 174,041.95, as the latest BTG Pactual/Nexus poll confirmed a technical tie in a simulated second-round presidential election, signaling a prolonged period of political uncertainty for the Brazilian market. The new data, released July 13, shows President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro locked in a statistical dead heat for the October 2026 vote, a dynamic that historically weighs on domestic equities and the Brazilian real (BRL).

The proximity of the race signals to investors that policy uncertainty regarding the next administration's fiscal path will continue to cloud long-term planning. In the second-round simulation, Lula holds 47% of the voting intentions against Flávio Bolsonaro's 44%, a three-percentage-point difference that falls within the poll’s two-point margin of error, making it a technical tie. This tight result reinforces the high degree of polarization in the country, limiting the ability of either candidate to pull decisively ahead. The market reaction today reflects the aversion to this sustained uncertainty, which often drives investors toward less risky assets and pressures the Real against the U.S. dollar.

In the first-round scenario, Lula holds a more substantial, but still modest, lead over the Senator, with 40% of the vote against Bolsonaro’s 34%. This inability for either candidate to clear the 50% threshold early suggests a runoff is increasingly likely, which is the source of the market's current jitters. Blue-chip stocks suffered notable losses as a result of the overall sentiment shift. State-run oil giant Petrobras (PETR4) fell 1.72% to 42.21, while mining major Vale (VALE3) shed 0.58% to 75.24. Financial sector losses, which are highly sensitive to domestic fiscal stability, were also pronounced, with Itaú Unibanco (ITUB4) dropping 1.08% to 42.1.

Market participants will continue to monitor every incremental shift in the polling data, which is now the primary short-term driver of volatility in Brazilian assets. Investors will now focus on the next major policy pronouncements from either of the front-runners, particularly regarding the budget and fiscal spending limits, as any indication of either an increase in fiscal expansion or a major policy shift will be reflected immediately in the USD/BRL pair and the Ibovespa's trajectory.
