Global Speculators Build Massive Long Bet on Soybeans, Pinning Hopes on Price Rise for Brazil’s Record Harvest

Large speculative traders in the U.S. futures market are holding a massive net-long position in soybeans, betting on a price increase for the critical commodity that Brazil exports in record volumes. Non-commercial traders, primarily hedge funds and other money managers, held 174,112 long contracts against only 57,215 short contracts in the latest weekly data, an aggressive stance that signals an expectation of significant price movement. This positioning, which results in a net long of over 116,000 contracts, is closely watched because extreme speculative activity often precedes—and sometimes drives—shifts in price.
