S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings have slashed the credit ratings of Brazilian petrochemical giant Braskem S.A. to default-equivalent levels. The downgrades follow a June 26 decision by the Second Bankruptcy and Judicial Reorganization Court of São Paulo, which granted the company a precautionary injunction suspending debt payments for 60 days to facilitate mediation with financial creditors. S&P lowered Braskem’s global scale issuer credit rating to 'D' from 'CCC-', while Fitch cut its Issuer Default Rating to 'C' from 'CC'.

The court-approved standstill has triggered immediate warnings for secondary market debt holders, who face the prospect of severe restructuring haircuts. Braskem is grappling with an acute liquidity squeeze, facing $549 million in debt service obligations—covering both principal amortization and interest payments—due in July 2026 alone. This near-term liability stands against an estimated cash position of only $800 million as of June, leaving the company with a dangerously thin financial cushion.

Negotiations remain highly contentious after creditors rejected Braskem’s initial out-of-court restructuring proposal. The company's opening offer included a controversial 200-basis-point coupon reduction and a five-year maturity extension on its outstanding debt. With the initial plan rejected, the 60-day legal window will serve as a high-stakes period for Braskem to negotiate revised terms with its financial counterparties.

The credit deterioration comes amid broader volatility in Brazilian markets. In local trading, the Ibovespa index (IBOV) edged down 0.36% to 176,010.9, while major blue chips showed mixed results: Petrobras (PETR4) fell 0.17% to 40.59, Vale (VALE3) gained 0.68% to 74.51, and Itaú Unibanco (ITUB4) dropped 1.12% to 43.14. Investors continue to monitor the USD/BRL exchange rate and Braskem's preferred shares (BRKM5) as restructuring talks progress.
