Assai Launches First Pharmacy in Sao Paulo to Drive Growth
Assai Atacadista enters the pharmaceutical sector with its first store in Sao Paulo, targeting higher margins and leveraging its 40 million monthly visitors.

SÃO PAULO — Assaí Atacadista (ASAI3) officially launched its first pharmacy unit in São Paulo state on July 16, 2026, marking a historic entry into the pharmaceutical sector. The debut of "Assaí Farma" at the Anhanguera store follows the recent sanctioning of Law 15.357/2026, which permits independent pharmacies to operate directly inside supermarket sales areas after more than three decades of regulatory restrictions.
The launch is part of the "Mundo Saúde" initiative, managed by Assaí's newly created Executive Directorate of New Business & Innovation. The company plans to open 25 pharmacies within its retail galleries during the second half of 2026, offering prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) products, and cosmetics to its massive base of 40 million monthly visitors. In the long term, the cash-and-carry giant aims to scale the model to more than 250 stores nationwide.
For investors, this diversification strategy serves as a key lever to boost profit margins and increase customer ticket sizes amid tight retail competition. CEO Belmiro Gomes noted that the cost of installing a pharmacy is roughly one-third of the cost of setting up an in-store butchery, making it a highly capital-efficient avenue for growth. The 120-square-meter units will operate during regular store hours, providing basic healthcare services like blood pressure checks and glucose monitoring alongside their retail offerings.
The strategic move comes amid a mixed day for Brazilian equities. The benchmark Ibovespa index (IBOV) fell 0.36% to 176,010.9 points. Among major market movers, Petrobras (PETR4) slipped 0.17% to 40.59 BRL, Itaú Unibanco (ITUB4) dropped 1.12% to 43.14 BRL, while mining giant Vale (VALE3) bucked the downward trend, rising 0.68% to trade at 74.51 BRL.
