StoneX Acquires Banco Travelex to Expand Global Payment Services in Brazil
StoneX Group has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Banco Travelex, Brazil's first dedicated foreign exchange bank.

Global financial services firm StoneX Group has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Banco Travelex S.A., Brazil’s first bank dedicated exclusively to foreign exchange operations, a move that significantly escalates StoneX’s expansion into the country’s corporate and international payments market. The announcement, made on Wednesday, confirms that the acquisition is designed to integrate Banco Travelex’s licensed, in-country infrastructure with StoneX’s global payments platform, substantially boosting its cross-border capabilities for its worldwide clientele. The combined operation is expected to handle approximately $6 billion in annual volume across about 20,000 clients, illustrating the scale of the combined financial flow.
The deal is a direct bid to capture more of the country’s high-volume cross-border investment and trade flows. For StoneX’s corporate clients, the acquisition is expected to add a host of localized Brazilian banking products and services, including non-resident bank accounts, direct access to the nation’s instant payment system, PIX, and enhanced financial settlement capabilities. This expansion targets companies with international needs, offering them a more integrated way to manage local and foreign currency transactions within Brazil’s regulated financial system.
Banco Travelex, which has been operating since 2010, is a highly specialized institution, recognized by the Central Bank of Brazil as the first bank focused solely on foreign exchange. In late 2024, the bank received authorization to operate as a banco múltiplo, or multiple-service bank, which broadened its functional capabilities. Crucially for foreign observers, the transaction only covers the wholesale banking unit, Banco Travelex S.A.; the familiar retail foreign exchange stores and service points operating under the Travelex Confidence brand are not part of the acquisition and will continue to operate independently. This distinction is important in Brazil, where different types of financial licenses govern distinct operations.
The transaction is the latest in a series of moves by global firms aggressively expanding their footprint in Brazil’s financial services sector to serve a growing base of corporate and institutional clients. For the deal to complete, it must first be approved by the Central Bank of Brazil, the nation’s top financial regulator. Given the need for deep integration and regulatory sign-off, the parties expect the transaction to close within the next 12 months, with integration to follow gradually to ensure no interruption of client services.
What it touches The expansion of StoneX Group Inc. (NASDAQ: SNEX) in Brazil via this acquisition directly links to the foreign exchange and payments sector. The company’s stock, which trades in the US, is a publicly exposed asset tracking the firm’s strategy to solidify its presence in the Brazilian financial market as a hub for cross-border transactions and global payments.
