BlackRock crosses 5% ownership threshold in paper giant Suzano
BlackRock has built a major passive stake in Suzano, one of the world's largest pulp and paper producers, crossing the 5% regulatory threshold.

American retail investors holding global index funds or tracking major asset managers just gained a larger, indirect footprint in the global paper and pulp supply chain. Asset management giant BlackRock, Inc. has officially crossed a key regulatory threshold, building a substantial passive stake in one of the world's largest pulp and paper producers.
On October 15, 2026, Brazilian pulp giant Suzano S.A. received a formal regulatory notification from BlackRock stating that the asset manager had crossed the 5% ownership threshold. As of October 13, 2026, BlackRock holds an aggregate of 63,242,887 common shares of the company. This position represents 5.003% of Suzano's total outstanding common shares.
The transaction highlights how major Wall Street institutions continue to quietly accumulate exposure to agricultural and raw material giants outside the United States. To build this position, BlackRock combined holdings across different markets, accumulating 62,366,570 local common shares traded in Brazil alongside 876,317 American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In its formal disclosure, BlackRock clarified that the acquisition is strictly for investment purposes and is not intended to alter Suzano’s administrative structure or corporate control.
For foreign investors, Suzano represents a massive player in the global forestry and packaging sectors, operating as a primary supplier of eucalyptus pulp to global consumer goods companies. The company's corporate governance is structured under the Novo Mercado rules of the Brazilian stock exchange, which mandate strict transparency and equal voting rights for minority shareholders.
While institutional moves of this size often signal long-term confidence in a sector's fundamentals, they do not guarantee short-term price appreciation. Suzano's financial performance remains highly sensitive to global commodity pricing cycles for pulp, international shipping costs, and currency fluctuations between the Brazilian real and the U.S. dollar.
