Why Latin America's Largest Bank Is Spending $580 Million on AI
Itaú Unibanco has agreed to acquire Brazilian AI startup NeoSpace for R$ 2.925 billion to build proprietary financial models and scale customer personalization.

Global financial institutions are increasingly turning to proprietary artificial intelligence to defend their profit margins against rising operational costs. On October 26, 2026, Latin America’s largest private lender showed how far a dominant bank is willing to go to keep that technology in-house.
Brazil’s Itaú Unibanco announced on October 26, 2026, that it has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of NeoSpace A.I. Technologies, a Brazilian startup specializing in large foundational data models, for R$ 2.925 billion (approximately $580 million). Under the terms of the deal, Itaú will pay an initial installment at closing, with the remaining balance deferred over five years subject to performance conditions.
The transaction marks a major escalation of Itaú's commitment to the startup. In January 2025, the bank led an $18 million funding round for NeoSpace, purchasing an initial minority stake. The full acquisition remains subject to regulatory approvals from Brazil's antitrust authority, CADE, and the Central Bank of Brazil.
Cutting Costs in a Volatile Market
Itaú's massive bet on proprietary AI comes at a time of heightened political and market volatility in Brazil. Following the country's recent presidential election, the Brazilian stock market has faced significant turbulence, with the benchmark Ibovespa index experiencing sharp dollar-denominated declines. By acquiring NeoSpace, Itaú aims to insulate its bottom line from macroeconomic swings by aggressively lowering its structural costs.
The bank has already spent nearly two years testing NeoSpace’s models. The startup’s technology has been integrated directly into Itaú’s internal operations to manage credit risk, automate customer relationship management (CRM), and detect transaction fraud. According to Itaú CEO Milton Maluhy Filho in a statement on October 26, 2026, the acquisition will allow the bank to build specialized, proprietary financial models and expand generative AI capabilities across its entire product portfolio.
Unlike standard commercial AI tools, NeoSpace focuses on Large Data Models (LDMs) that process complex, multi-format financial data rather than just text. Itaú plans to use this technology to power its proprietary generative AI assistant, "ia.i," with the goal of rolling out personalized financial services to 100% of its retail app users by the end of 2026. NeoSpace will continue to operate as an autonomous unit under its founder and CEO, Bruno Pierobon.

Itaú Unibanco is listed in New York and its performance is heavily tied to its ability to maintain high efficiency ratios in a competitive Latin American banking market. Investors holding the stock or broad emerging market exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track large-cap Brazilian equities will see this acquisition as a direct test of whether proprietary AI can successfully offset regional macroeconomic volatility.
