Sigma Lithium gains financial runway after Brazil court reopens mine
Sigma Lithium has extended its $100 million debt maturity with Synergy Capital to June 2027, following a court ruling that reinstated its environmental licenses.

US investors holding electric vehicle and battery-metal stocks directly in their brokerage accounts are tracking a critical operational and financial turnaround for one of South America's most prominent lithium producers. The developments highlight how regulatory decisions and debt structures shape the volatile landscape for raw material suppliers tied to the global energy transition.
The changes center on Sigma Lithium Corporation, a major mining enterprise operating in Brazil's Minas Gerais state. Unlike most foreign companies that trade in New York via secondary depositary receipts, this producer is directly listed on the Nasdaq, meaning retail investors own the actual common shares.
The company secured a major legal victory in Brazil's federal courts on October 5, 2026. Senior Federal Judge Mônica Sifuentes of Brazil's Federal Court of Appeals granted an emergency motion reinstating the environmental licenses for the company's flagship Grota do Cirilo project. The appellate ruling overturned a September 2026 emergency order by a local judge that had temporarily halted operations following a lawsuit by a local community association.
In her ruling, Judge Sifuentes warned that a prolonged operational stoppage would cause severe and lasting economic harm to the Jequitinhonha Valley, a historically low-income region where the mine supports thousands of jobs. Following the ruling, Sigma Lithium immediately resumed operations and produced 7,090 tonnes of lithium oxide concentrate between October 5 and October 21, 2026.
Debt Maturity Extended
With operations back online, the company has also addressed its immediate balance sheet pressures. On October 23, 2026, Sigma Lithium signed an agreement with Synergy Capital to extend the maturity of its $100 million senior secured debt by six months, pushing the repayment deadline from December 2026 to June 2027.
The interest rate on the facility remains unchanged at the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) plus 6.95% per annum. According to company filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, this extension covers 93% of the company's total debt profile, providing additional financial runway as the company ramps up production toward its annualized target of 330,000 tonnes by the end of 2027.
The company has reduced its total debt by approximately 40% over the past two years, bringing its total outstanding debt down to $125 million as of October 21, 2026, through cash generated from operations. Sigma Lithium is scheduled to report its third-quarter financial and production results by November 13, 2026.
