Afya Limited, one of Brazil’s largest medical education companies, saw its shares rise 3.21% to close at $13.84 on Monday, following the release of its robust financial results for the first half of 2026. The increase reflects strong investor confidence in the company’s core business—training doctors and healthcare professionals across Brazil, a service in high demand that continues to power the company's balance sheet.

For foreign investors seeking direct access to the Brazilian growth story, Afya is an important name, as it holds a primary listing on the NASDAQ exchange, bypassing the need for an American Depositary Receipt (ADR) that most Brazilian companies require for US trading. The company is a crucial pipeline for the Brazilian healthcare system, operating a network of campuses and educational facilities dedicated to addressing the persistent shortage of medical professionals, particularly in underserved regions of the country.

The financial strength underpinning the stock movement was evident in the first half of the year, which saw net income climb by 6.8% to R$463 million, while revenue grew 7.0% year-over-year to R$1.98 billion. This growth was largely fueled by the company’s undergraduate medical education segment, where the student base expanded to more than 26,000, and Afya maintained pricing power, demonstrating the resilience of its most important business unit. Afya also reported strong operating cash generation and returned R$448 million to shareholders through a combination of dividends and a share repurchase program.

While the core business remains solid, the company is also executing on its strategy to build a broader ecosystem by investing in its digital health platforms and continuing education offerings for practicing physicians. These planned investments have led to some expected margin compression, but management has reaffirmed its full-year revenue guidance, signaling confidence that the spending is a necessary long-term hedge against competition and disruption in the field of Brazilian medical education.

What it touches The upward price movement directly affects shares of Afya Limited (NASDAQ: AFYA), a key representative of Brazil’s private education sector with a significant mandate in the country's essential healthcare system.
