Afya S.A., Brazil’s largest medical education group, saw its shares surge on Monday, climbing 3.21% to close at $13.84, as investors continued to react positively to the company's underlying financial strength in the second quarter. The upward move signals a recovery in confidence in the Brazilian healthcare and education sector, which Afya dominates.

The company is a key player in the Brazilian economy, providing essential medical training and digital solutions across the country's vast healthcare system. Afya is the world's first medical education company to list its primary shares directly on the Nasdaq, allowing foreign investors to buy its stock without the use of an American Depositary Receipt (ADR). It operates a powerful ecosystem that includes undergraduate medical courses—it holds the highest number of authorized medical school seats in Brazil—continuing education programs, and technology solutions for practicing physicians.

The current stock movement is a delayed endorsement of the financial results the company reported last week for the first half of 2026. Afya’s first-half revenue rose 7.0% year-over-year to R$1.98 billion, with net income growing 6.8% in the same period. Management also underscored the company's strong cash position and disciplined capital allocation by returning a significant R$447.9 million to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks. While the company's adjusted EBITDA margins saw a slight narrowing due to investment in its expansion, the core medical education business and robust cash flow have clearly reassured the market.

Afya’s performance hinges on a key dynamic in Brazil: the high demand for new medical professionals and a tightly controlled regulatory environment for medical schools. This setup provides the company with stable, recurring revenue from tuition fees for its medical students, which are core to its business model. The company’s ability to generate strong cash flow has allowed it to affirm its full-year revenue guidance, with analysts noting the stock trades at a discount to its estimated intrinsic value, suggesting room for further re-rating.

Moving forward, investors will be watching Afya's execution on its capital expenditure plans, which project spending of up to $380 million to support strategic growth initiatives. These investments are focused on expanding its geographical footprint and enhancing its digital offerings to physicians, securing its long-term position as a provider for the entire medical career life cycle.

What it touches

Afya trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker AFYA. The direct listing makes it one of the few Brazilian companies easily accessible to US retail investors without using an American Depositary Receipt. The move today suggests an increased appetite for its shares following the disclosure of strong underlying business fundamentals in its latest earnings report.
