American travelers planning winter getaways to South America are facing a sudden contraction in flight options. Brazilian low-cost carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas confirmed in October 2026 that it will temporarily suspend all six of its direct routes connecting Brazil to Miami and Orlando. The service suspensions, scheduled to take effect on February 1, 2027, will eliminate direct departures to Florida from major regional hubs including Brasília, Fortaleza, Belém, and Manaus.

The retreat comes as Brazil's state-backed oil company, Petrobras, implemented a 7.2% price hike on aviation kerosene (QAV) for distributors on November 1, 2026. This latest adjustment follows a steep 11.8% price increase enacted by Petrobras on October 1, 2026. According to statements from GOL, these successive hikes have caused local jet fuel prices to double over the recent period, pushing fuel expenses to account for approximately 40% of the airline's total operating costs.

Petrobras, which updates its aviation fuel pricing monthly under distributor contracts, attributed the rising costs to international pressures. In its November 1, 2026, pricing update, the state-controlled firm noted that global oil derivatives remain under heavy pressure from geopolitical tensions and refining capacity constraints. While Petrobras utilizes a smoothing formula to buffer local distributors from daily international price swings, the cumulative domestic fuel price surge has proved too heavy for highly leveraged regional carriers to absorb.

For GOL, the route suspensions represent a defensive consolidation as it navigates a highly leveraged financial position. The airline, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States in January 2024, emerged from its restructuring process in early 2025. Despite launching ambitious international expansion plans earlier in the year, the combination of soaring fuel costs and post-bankruptcy debt pressures has forced a reevaluation of its long-distance narrowbody Boeing 737 MAX 8 operations.

GOL has stated that network planning remains a dynamic process and that it will accommodate affected passengers through its existing codeshare and interline partnerships. The temporary suspensions are currently scheduled to run through March 27, 2027.
