Itaú Unibanco Backs Restructuring of Eyewear Retailer Chilli Beans
Brazilian eyewear brand Chilli Beans filed for extrajudicial recovery on October 30, 2026, to restructure R$ 340 million in bank debt with backing from Itaú.

Corporate debt restructurings are quietly reshaping the retail landscape in Latin America's largest economy, directly involving the major financial institutions held in international investment portfolios. On October 30, 2026, prominent Brazilian eyewear and accessories brand Chilli Beans filed for extrajudicial recovery to restructure R$ 340 million ($58.8 million) in bank debts.
Itaú Unibanco, Brazil’s largest private sector bank, is stepping in alongside financial advisory firm Akron Capital and asset manager Vega Asset to act as the primary anchor financiers. Together, they are coordinating and injecting up to R$ 50 million ($8.6 million) in new capital to support the restructuring plan.
For global investors, this intervention highlights how Brazil's major banks are actively managing credit risks as high domestic interest rates pressure consumer-facing businesses. Chilli Beans, which operates roughly 900 franchise locations across Brazil and has a retail footprint in 14 countries, is the latest in a string of Brazilian retailers forced to reorganize. According to data from corporate restructuring consultancy RGF, Brazil closed the first half of 2026 with 6,341 active companies operating under court-supervised judicial recovery.
By opting for an extrajudicial recovery—a pre-negotiated restructuring framework approved directly with key financial creditors—Chilli Beans avoided a more disruptive, court-supervised bankruptcy filing. The company’s founder and CEO, Caito Maia, stated that the financial stress originated during the pandemic and was compounded by prolonged high interest rates in Brazil.
Crucially for the brand's day-to-day operations, the restructuring agreement is strictly limited to financial debts owed to banks. All commitments to suppliers, employees, and commercial franchise partners are fully preserved and excluded from the renegotiation, allowing the retail network to continue operating without interruption.
